GAME IMPROVEMENT TECHNOLOGY - DRIVERS 2008-03-18

As we approach season many golfers will think about the technology in their bag. As always, chat to me (via email) before making any decisions – whilst there is technology that is available to improve your game, there is a lot of it, and much of it won’t suit your game.

Drivers are one of the most popular clubs to upgrade, so here are a few tips and reminders:

a) You get two types of shaft – graphite and steel. Graphite is lighter, which means higher club head speed, faster ball speed and more distance. The lighter shaft also means the designers can make larger clubheads which will maximise carry and roll distance.

b) Check the kick point in the Driver. This is the point along a shaft's length where it exhibits the greatest amount of bend when the tip is pulled down. A lower kick point will result in a higher launch trajectory and vice versa.

c) Make sure you know a bit about the club head. It can be made of steel, titanium or it could be a graphite composite. The club head will have a centre of gravity – if it’s low and deep, you’re going to get a higher launch trajectory. The Moment of Intertia (MOI) refers to the club head’s resistance to twisting – higher MOI will result in more forgiveness on off-centre hits.

d) The loft on your Driver is typically anywhere between 7 and 12 degrees. The ball will get more backspin with a higher loft resulting in a straighter flight and more forgiveness. You may consider a lower loft for more distance, but make sure that you have the club head speed to go with this choice!
