WHICH HEAD SHAPE IS BEST? 2008-03-18
We are about to enter the silly season again. It’s not just silly because you could have traveled south along with the swallows to play golf in warmer climates but chose to stay and play in your new nanotechnology waterproofs. No, here we go with the ‘weird’ Driver head releases.
We’ve seen the head grow larger each year until the USGA and R&A limits were hit at 460cc. So then each year has now graced us with a different shape. Sloping crowns, followed by square heads, followed by the bullet head. And in amongst all of that Wilson release a Driver with a clear spine and Mizuno take us back to the pear shape traditional.

It used to be pretty simple to listen to the tech speak as well. Srixon introduced us to the ‘Hot Face’ but that wasn’t enough and we got COR that changed somehow to Characteristic of Time while other manufacturers have persisted with the Hot Zones, Hitting Zones and ‘Maximum COR faces’. But we knew really that it was all about distance.
But then the conversation moved on and we got spin rates, launch angles, moment of inertia, Gear Effect and a Center of Gravity that, if the manufacturers are to be believed, has been moved around more than football coaches at Tottenham Hotspur.
And then came the head shape with attempts to link specific head shapes to very definite performance improvement. If it’s square then it must be high MOI. Trouble is, TaylorMade’s Burner isn’t square, it is bullet and it has a High MOI. Oh and the new MP600 isn’t bullet shaped and it’s also high MOI. Where does that leave you?
So is it all about the ‘geometrics’ of the shape of the head?
No, of course it isn’t. It’s about your swing, your requirements and what works for you.
The head will draw your attention but remember each of the Drivers you pick up will probably have different weight shafts, different length shafts, different CG positions all influencing how that club will work for you.
Choosing a new Driver is about your golf NOT the shape of a club head. Before you drag a new Driver off the shelf and buy on the shape of things that might be, let me help you select the right club with the promise of the shape of things to come.
