LONG LIVE THE FAIRWAY WOOD
2008-03-18
Over the last two years the Fairway Wood has not received the coverage or publicity that it deserves. There is a feeling that it is being squeezed out between the large 460cc headed Drivers that allow you to be so much more accurate off the tee and the easy to hit, high trajectory hybrid.
Wrong. The Fairway Wood is a very specific club, which offers its own flexibility. The club is designed as a ‘wood’ that is easier to control and use than the Driver courtesy of a much shorter shaft (usually between 42 & 43"). This will allow you much more accuracy off the tee (than the Driver) and more distance (than the hybrid).
In that way the Fairway Wood is a perfect compromise of distance and accuracy.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO EXPERIMENT
One of the key advantages of the Fairway Wood is the shaft that is shorter than that on the modern Driver. That makes it easier to control and therefore much more accurate from the tee.
Have you tried playing a whole round without using your Driver? Go on, try using a 3-Wood every time you would usually pull the Driver out and compare your performance (number of fairways hit and total score).
The sole and head is designed to allow you to play shots off the Fairway with very specific features designed to manage turf contact. Once again the head design allows for a trajectory and roll to provide maximum distance rather than the soft landing of a hybrid. These same features also enable you to play the Fairway Wood from bunkers and light rough.
Once again though there are an amazing number of options available today with ‘moveable weight technology’ in Fairway Woods, a large variety of lofts and increasingly different looking head designs.
Remember the rule: When selecting golf clubs start with your game NOT the product. What are you going to use your Fairway Woods for? Where are the strengths in your game? Come and chat if you want some assistance.
