YOUR GOLF BALL HAS INTELLIGENCE 2008-03-29
The golf ball you play with can significantly change the launch angle and the trajectory of the ball flight.
Articles published in magazines and web sites state that you need to increase the loft on your Driver to increase the distance that you will achieve off the tee, if your swing speed is anywhere near or below the average. The argument is that you will be playing with a Driver that has too little loft to create the launch angle that will be best for your swing speed.
The combination of dual core, mantle and cover on the Callaway TOUR ix will work to create a better launch angle and spin rate for you.
At the same time, golf ball manufacturers, especially in the premium golf balls, have been trying to increase the angle of launch off the club face to allow you to take advantage of the extra distance that will result. In the multi-layer premium golf ball, a mantle that sits between the cover and the core will react differently according to the ascent of the blow (i.e. a Driver and 9-Iron hit the ball in a very different way) to generate the best trajectory and spin rate for you.
As well as impacting the launch angle, the mantle will also impact on the spin rate of the shot. The mantle is able to react to a Driver and work to produce a lower spin rate, while still creating the higher spin rates you need with the shorter Irons. It’s that ‘intelligence’ within the golf ball that you are paying for when you buy a premium golf ball.
But again, remember that no golf ball can be all things to all golfers. That is why the best manufacturers all offer at least two multi-layer golf balls.
The fastest swing speed golfers with good ball striking skills, who already generate good spin themselves, need a golf ball that will dial back a little on the increase in launch angle and the increased spin rates. These golfers don’t need their golf ball to help with the trajectory.
For faster swing speed golfers who already produce a high ball flight the Srixon Z-URC is a better solution than the Z-URS.
