DRIVERS – IMPROVING YOUR GAME OFF THE TEE 2008-06-01

Drivers used to be designed from heavy steel or wood, solid or thick-walled heads and steel or hickory shafts. In the past I can understand that Drivers were not the most favoured club in the bag but with the newest releases you should feel added confidence on the tee.

With the introduction of ultra-thin wall technology, titanium faces and lightweight graphite shafts, designers were able to produce the 460cc head size drivers without the club becoming too heavy. The designers actually saved so much weight compared to the Drivers of the past that they could reposition this weight to help Drive the ball further down the middle.

Moving weight in the Driver as low and far away from the face as possible, has made it easy for golfers to get higher launch, extra carry and therefore added distance.

With that weight being so deep and spread out behind the face, the Driver head can resist twisting which helps create greater accuracy on off centre shots.

Come into the shop and compare the head shapes. Despite the fact that all the new Drivers have easy to hit 460cc heads there are a large number of variations on head shape (from bullet at one end to square at the other).

A deep faced Driver such as the Mizuno MX-560 places emphasis on a better result across the entire face.

By placing weight low and deep in the Mizuno MX-560, golfers will achieve higher launch and will suffer less loss in distance and accuracy on off centre shots.

We have seen a revolution in Driver design. Advances in the late 90’s made the Driver much easier to hit with “hotter faces” for more distance. Then came head design for higher launch angles and lower spin rate for greater carry and now we have had geometric design for straighter tee shots. Never mind 1975, a Driver from 2008 is already a long way on from a Driver of 2004.
